Lutas Film Festival Returns Online by Danielle Spontak

It’s hard to believe a year has gone by since the last Lutas Film Festival premiered its regional short films, an event that turned out to be a big success full of entertainment and provocative content. Now, during this global pandemic, the year we find ourselves in seems to endlessly drag on and on and yet, it came as a genuine surprise to see September arrive equipped with its usual Christmas music. While quarantine has rendered cancellations left and right, the 7thannual Lutas Film Festival will continue to keep the beacon of creativity alive.

More than ever, the world has begun to realize the significance of stories – how they impact our lives, how they add meaning, how they bring us together. People all over the planet have turned to films as they find themselves isolated inside to remain safe from a deadly virus. Presented by Foundation University in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and Arts and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, we are pleased to announce the Lutas Film Festival’s return. We are going online to continue to provide platforms for our regional filmmakers, and it’s absolutely FREE!

Beginning on September 17, Lutas will conduct Master Classes that offer truly fascinating topics relevant to our current times. The first to take place is an examination of “Pursuing Film in the Times of a Pandemic”, followed by a brilliant film by Carla Ocampo, TOKWIFI. There will even be a live film discussion via Facebook Live from the director herself!

There will be two more days for participants to enjoy what Lutas has arranged this year. On September 18, the second Master Class will explain the craft of screenplay and script writing followed by two exceptional demonstrations of film, THE BEST OF LUTASand Komedya. The last day of Lutas has something very exciting:

A chance to have your own film produced!

In light of the pandemic and the hardships it has caused for creatives, Lutas will award P20,000 to one lucky filmmaker to produce their own film to be premiered in the next year’s festival. On September 19, participants can pitch their screenplay ideas and the winner will be announced that very same evening. The film festival will close with a discussion for filmmakers and participants alike.
